Notes on systematic creativity and design evaluation

In engineering, options appear as the result of design. And evaluation of the designs is in the nutshell the evaluation of different conceptual ideas.

Thus, two most difficult elements of new product development are idea generating and idea evaluation. We will briefly review tools for systematic creativity support, especially TRIZ, the theory for inventive problem solving. It will be shown how heuristic stage of design can become more controlled and predictable, how new concepts can be generated on demand. Finally, we will review the theory and practice of telling apart good design from bad design. There will be a number of original examples and case studies given to illustrate the contents and provoke the discussion.
